In 1809, on December 30th, Boston Massachusetts banned the wearing of masks at balls. Boston was following many other places - including England - by banning masked balls, which were considered to contribute to loose morals. After all, with masks, you couldn't tell the class of the person or even their gender! The law was extended in 1849 and repealed in 1963.
Did you know?
In 1820, on February 23rd, a plot to murder the Cabinet of the United Kingdom - called the Cato Street Conspiracy - was discovered in England. Thirteen people were arrested of which five were hanged and decapitated (some people paid for a good view of the hanging, attendance was so large). These were the last beheadings in Great Britain.
