He had siblings Roxy Gertrude Coble-Burdette-Fudge (Née Thayer), Helen Florence Biellier (Née Thayer), Roscoe Crockett Thayer, and Roxanne M. Marlin-Brown-Frey (Née Thayer). He married ♀ Thayer (Née Chastain), and had a child ♀ Pearce (Née Thayer). Roy Thayer died at age 80 years old on March 29, 2009 in Wichita, KS, and was buried at Kansas Veterans Cemetery At Winfield Section 08 Row 16 Site 0158 1208 North College Streeet - P. O. Box 626, in Winfield.

In 1944, when he was only 15 years old, on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.
