Roy Shiell married Jean Agnes Sharpe in 1921, and died at age 59 years old on November 17, 1951 in Heidelberg, City of Banyule County.

In 1892, in the year that Roy Henry Shiell was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
