  • Introduction

    Rosa Lee Allen Burney's father was Jim Allen and her mother was Mattie Robinson. When Rosa was 8, she and her siblings were living in Wagener, South Carolina, with their grandparents, James and Margaret Allen. The siblings ranged in age from 15 down to 8. They were: Hattie, Willie, Maggie, James, and, or course, Rosa. Grandpa James was a farmer. After she completed her education in South Carolina, Rosa moved to Atlanta Georgia. She began working and also married. Rosa married Charles Burney but he died on July 26, 1968, predeceasing Rosa. They had sons Charles Jr. and Jerome. See Charles Burney Sr. Obituary Rosa was a community activist in Atlanta Georgia who helped to revitalize the South-Atlanta Mechanicsville community. There is a park named after her and an apartment complex, Rosa Burney Park, and Rosa Burney Manor. She also was a dietician who worked in the Atlanta School District.     The following appeared in The Atlanta Voice (Atlanta, Georgia) 10 April 1993, Sat Page 1 Activist Burney Dies At 72 Longtime activist Mrs. Rosa Burney passed after a long illness, April 4, in Atlanta. She was 72. Mrs. Rosa Lee Allen Burney was born September 6, 1920 in Walhalla, South Carolina to the late Jim Allen and the late Mattie Allen Robinson. Upon completing her public school education in Oconee County, South Carolina and Seneca Junior College in Seneca, South Carolina, Mrs. Burney moved to Atlanta to work and further her education. Shortly after moving here she married Charlie Burney. They had two sons, Charles E. and Jerome A. In 1962, Rosa Lee acquired employment with the Atlanta School Nutrition Department as a Dietician where she remained until her retirement in 1987 from Brandon Elementary Schools as a cafeteria manager. While employed with the school system of Atlanta, Mrs. Burney was very active with the PTA of W.H. Crogman Elementary, W.L. Parks Middle, L. J. Price High and Roosevelt High School. A very community and civic oriented person, Mrs. Burney gave of her time and services to a number of organizations, among them: the Atlanta Model Cities Program; Atlanta Police Citizen Review Board; Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts; Black Women Wellness Center and the co-founder of Summech Land Trust, Inc., Visionary of the Mechanicsville Family and Community Reunion; Southside Day Care Association; Butler Street YMCA; Economic Opportunity Atlanta; and American Postal Workers Union. She received numerous recognitions for her community and civic activities. Mrs. Burney is survived by her two sons; daughters-in-law, Annette and Toni Burney; stepdaughter, Helen Ball; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother Elijah Robinson, Bronx, NY; sister, Hattie B. Sherman, Walhalla, South Carolina; two sisters-in-law; god-daughter Sharon Collins; nephews, nieces, and a host of other relative and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 236 Richardson St., SW, Atlanta.
