Roger H Garate of Niota, McMinn County, TN was born circa March 29, 1944 at Havana, Cuba to Roger Garate and Elsa Estrella (Ortiz) Garate. He had a brother Andrew Garate. He was in a relationship with Priscilla (Phillips) Garate, and had children Sherry Marie (Garate) Evans and Roger Carlton Garate. Roger Garate died at age 66 years old on September 9, 2010.

    Roger was Caucasian, his mother and father were born in Havana, Cuba. His great uncle was Gen. Enrique Loynaz del Castillo, the leader of Cuban forces who defeated the Spanish in the Cuban war of independence., and wrote the Cuban national anthem. Roger served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam war. He later worked for Eastern Airlines, Northwest airlines, and Lockheed ( skunkworks at Area 51). He started Garate’s Gunsmith Shop in Douglasville Georgia, and was an accomplished gunsmith. Roger was very active in mountain man rendezvous, and built a covered wagon for those events.

In 1944, in the year that Roger H Garate was born, on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.

In 1961, at the age of 17 years old, Roger was alive when on August 13th, East Germany began erection of what would become the Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin. In one day, they installed barbed wire entanglements and fences (called Barbed Wire Sunday in Germany). On August 17th, the first concrete elements and large blocks were put in place.
