Roberto Del Toro 1925 - 2001

Roberto Del Toro of Puerto Rico was born on August 16, 1925 in Arecibo to Domingo Del Toro and Maria De León. He had siblings Anibal Del Toro, Maria Mercado-Del Toro, Margarita Del Toro, and Juanita Del Toro de Sánchez. He married Gloria Pilar (Medina) de Del Toro in December 1947, and had a child María Pilar Del Toro. Roberto Del Toro died at age 76 years old on November 18, 2001.

Professional Career

Started working at a very early age to support his parents and 2 younger siblings. Joined the US Army at age 18 and upon return, at age 20, he studied accounting and worked at a local cooperative for about 5 years. From there, he went to run a small local bank from which he eventually retired. After retirement he worked independently in the accounting field. He also purchased houses to repair and turn over for profit. He was a whiz at whatever he chose to do, a bright gentleman who enjoyed life along with all of its challenges and responsibilities. He enjoyed gardening, sharing time with old friends and helping others. Roberto Del Toro was a man I was very proud to have for a father.

Originally airing as “The WSM Barn Dance”, the Opry (a local term for "opera") was dedicated to honoring country music and in its history has featured the biggest stars and acts in country music.

In 1935, Roberto was just 10 years old when on August 14, the Social Security Act was signed into law. The purpose was to "provide federal assistance to those unable to work". The law established the Social Security Administration whose primary focus was to "provide aid for the elderly, the unemployed, and children". The Act survived many Supreme Court challenges and the Administration continues until today.
