THOMSON.- On the 6th September, at the residence of his son- in-law, Mr. Hugh Marks, Yarraville, Victoria, while on a visit, Robert, beloved husband of Jane Thomson, Church-street, Port Adelaide, and father of Mrs. H. Keightley, Oxford Hotel, North Adelaide, and R.W. Thomson, Angas-street, Adelaide. Aged 66 years.

In 1822, in the year that Robert Thomson was born, on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.
