Robert Scott Kay of Campbellfield, City of Hume County, VIC Australia was born on June 29, 1874 in Sandhurst, City of Frankston County to Harriett Williamson Kay and John Kay. He had siblings Harriet (Kay) Freeland, Mary Elizabeth (Kay) Pallot, Alexander William Kay, Martha Maude Kay, George Edward Kay, Lily Ann Victoria Kay, Frances Grace Kay Bertrand, John Williamson Kay, Miriam Margaret (Kay) Harris, and Malcolm Ferguson Kay. He married Ida Morham Kay in 1907, and had children Ida Daphne Kay, Mabel Evelyn Kay, and Doris Jean Kay. Robert Kay died at age 69 years old on May 11, 1944 in Campbellfield, City of Hume County.

In 1874, in the year that Robert Scott Kay was born, on May 20th, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were approved for a patent for "blue jeans with copper rivets". They charged $13.50 per dozen jeans. Although the term "jeans" was first used in 1795 - in Italy - using rivets to reinforce stress points in jeans such as pockets and the bottom of the fly was an original idea..

In 1903, at the age of 29 years old, Robert was alive when the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.
