Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Robert was born in Houston, Texas to Edna Dolores Mitchell Rogers and Bobby James Rogers. He was a sweet and happy baby and his family doted on him. His Grandma, Laura Mae Mitchell nicknamed him Jelly Bean because of his love of bright colors and the colorful tee shirts he wore as a child. His Paw Paw, David Benton Mitchell Sr, loved him dearly and spent a lot of time with him from his infancy. Paw Paw made sure he, as a baby, had a seemingly never ending supply of caramels which Robert loved, and loved to share once they were sufficiently slobbery. Robert’s biological father disappeared from his life when Robert was about three years old. His mother remarried when Robert was about 7 years old. His step father was a fireman and he formally adopted Robert and his younger sister Anita at which time Robert Rogers officially became Robert Otis Kyle Jr. Robert graduated from Aldine Senior High School and went to work for his Paw Paw and learned the glass business. Robert met his future wife Nannette Barrera while he was volunteering at a little league baseball park where her children played. It was love at first sight and the two were inseparable and married in September 1994. Nannette Barrera Kyle had two children from her first marriage and Robert loved them and helped her raise them. Robert and Nannette also had a son, Nicklaus Barrera Kyle born in December 1995. Nicklaus brought them both a lot of joy, hope, and inspiration. Robert attended college and became certified as an Operating Room Assistant and worked for Harris Health Sustem for a period. Robert was a happy person and his joy was contagious and attracted many friends to him. He spent 15 + years and won many honors with the South Houston Fire Department. He also worked for 15 + years with the City of South Houston Parks Department. Robert entered St Luke’s Hospital in the Houston Medical Center for cervical discectomy and fusion on December 13, 2024. There was a cardiac event during the surgery but he was revived and was his usual happy self, joking around with his wife Nannette and cousin Billy Wayne Golden. At some time during the night he suffered a second cardiac event. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 20, 2024. He was preceded in death by his Grandmother Laura Mae Mitchell and his Grandfather David B Mitchell. In his lifetime Robert Kyle touched the hearts and lives of many people. He is survived by his wife Nannette Kyle, his son Nicklaus Kyle, and his cousin and friend Billy Golden, his step children Tara her brother Jacob, his parents Dolly and Robert O Kyle of Humble, Texas as well as a multitude of aunts, uncles, coworkers, and friends.

Add Memories, Stories & Photos about Robert

Robert loved Mexican food. His mother, his sister and he lived with the Mitchell grandparents after his parents separated. His grandmother became concerned when he stopped eating and discussed his loss of appetite with her doctor during her personal health check. The doctor asked if he had lost a lot of weight because of not eating the evening meal and commented that Robert appeared to be physically healthy at his last checkup. One day Grandma Mitchell bumped into a neighbor in the grocery store. That lady was Hispanic and commented to Grandma that Robert was at her house every night for supper. Grandma realized that was the root of Robert’s “lost appetite.”Grandma offered to contribute to the neighbor’s grocery bill which the kind lady declined., saying that she had six or seven kids at home and that having one more at the table was not a big deal!
Robert was an active member of The Church of Christ in Champions on the north side of Houston as a teenager and regularly attended services there.

Robert loved to swim, and loved sports of all kinds.

He was popular with the kids he went to church and school with, especially the girls. He had the gift of gab and drew people into his conversations and cohort through it. He made everyone feel included.
