Robert John Ohmie 1925 - 2005

Robert John Ohmie of Coffeyville, Montgomery County, KS was born on July 8, 1925 to Bertha Marie Martha Louise (Gehrke) Ohmie and John Dietrich Ohmie. Robert Ohmie had siblings Herman William Ohmie, Irwin Clarence Ohmie, Harry Edward Ohmie Sr, Raymond Leroy Ohmie, Floyd Eugene Ohmie, Mildred (Ohmie) Corbett, and Lillie Irene (Ohmie) Adams. He married Hazel J (Nading) Ohmie. He also married Beverly (Pierson) Ohmie and they later divorced. They had a child Barbara Ohmie. He married Hazel (Greschen) McCalley and they later divorced. Robert Ohmie died at age 79 years old on March 30, 2005 in Coffeyville, and was buried circa April 1, 2005 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Coffeyville, Montgomery Co County.

In 1925, in the year that Robert John Ohmie was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

In 1948, at the age of 23 years old, Robert was alive when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
