    Robert Emmett Mulvihill was born on September 2, 1927 in Alameda, California to parents Michael John Mulvihill Jr (1903-1968) and Eulalia Mae Parker (1902-1984). He enlisted in the Air Force on March 2nd, 1951, at the age of 23. He was assigned to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After completing his basic training, he was trained as a radar operator and was assigned to the 660th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron in Japan. During his time in the Air Force, Mulvihill served as a radar operator during the Korean War. He was responsible for detecting and tracking enemy aircraft and providing early warning to allied forces. Mulvihill was stationed in Japan for the majority of his service, but he also served in Korea and the Philippines. Robert Mulvihill was discharged from the Air Force on March 1st, 1955, after four years of service. He returned to Oakland, California, where he worked as a salesman. On July 4, 1958 he married Mary Helen Dubendorf (1931–1987) in San Francisco, California, USA. The couple had two children together: Patrick J Mulvihill (1959-2003) and Matthew E Mulvihill (1961-2014).
