Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 at Llandaff in Cardiff, South Glamorgan UK to Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg Dahl and Harald Dahl, and had siblings Astri Dahl, Alfhild Dahl, and Else Dahl. He married Patricia Neal on July 2, 1953 and they later divorced on November 17, 1983. They had children Olivia Twenty Dahl, Chantal Sophia Dahl, Theo Matthew Dahl, Ophelia Magdalena Dahl, and Lucy Neal Dahl. He also married Liccy Dahl on December 15, 1983, and they were married until Roald's death on November 23, 1990.

In 1916, in the year that Roald Dahl was born, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.

In 1945, by the time he was 29 years old, in October, automobile production in the United States for private consumers was allowed to resume. It took a while for car makers to get those new cars to buyers - they had to once again change their manufacturing plants, this time from war production to peacetime.
