He also married Anna Belle (Ryal) Cowan, and they had children Darleen Cowan, Brenda L. Cowan, Riley L. Cowan Jr., Danny Cowan, Carolyn Cowan, Robert L. Cowan, and Rebecca L. Cowan. Riley Cowan died at age 63 years old on January 12, 2000.

My grandfather was known to many as Riley (DOC) Cowan. He was born in Arkansas, but the family moved to Oklahoma when he was younger. He had four brothers. He never really talked about his childhood. I can tell you that he was a Great man. He always took care of his children and grandchildren. I was the only granddaughter for 13 years, and was spoiled rotten. He always had a smile on his face, and would make jokes that would have you laughing til you cried. He was a man that believed a man needed to work to support his family. He instilled in me my work ethic. The only time I know of that he did not work everyday was when he finally got to sick with his cancer. He was always very frank and to the point. He told you what he thought. I remember once when I was about 10 I asked him how long he would live. I asked him this because he meant the world to me, and I guess I was hoping he would tell me never. But, he told me he would die on the 12th of never. Well let me tell you, he was right in a sense. He died January 12th of 2000. According to all the talk back then, the world was supposed to crash at the beginning of 2000. I miss him all the time, and wished he lived to be able to see my children. My son looks like him, and I believe he will probably be as tall and broad as he was. I know he is watching over me and mine, and I hope that he would be proud of what I have accomplished.
