(Cheryl) Pergolizzi, Jr. and Laura Pergolizzi; dear brother of James J. Pergolizzi, Jr.; cherished grandfather of Luca and Miah Pergolizzi. Pergolizzi, formerly of Grahamsville, died on Friday, August 4, 2006 at his residence in Leesburg, Va. He was 70. For the past 18 years, Richard had his law office in Grahamsville. The son of James J. Pergolizzi and Madeline Pergolizzi (Smith), he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on August 23, 1936. A graduate of Brooklyn Law School, he had a successful legal partnership with his brother James J. Pergolizzi Jr. on Commack, Long Island, specializing in construction law and building developments. Subsequently, he joined the New York State Real Estate Division of Housing. Richard started working under Governor Nelson Rockefeller and continued under Governor Mario Cuomo. Among his major projects for New York State, Richard was legal counsel for the development of Co-Op City in the Bronx. He was governor's liaison for the Love Canal tragedy near Buffalo. Under Governor Cuomo, Richard was the lead writer of several laws. He eventually worked for the New York State Liquor Authority. Upon retirement, Richard moved to Sundown and then to Route 55A in Napanoch. Too active to retire, he shared a Grahamsville law office with William A. Brenner. Richard was a member of Elks Lodge 1971 in Napanoch and the Call Shanty Hunting Club. He was an avid under and fisherman, frequently hunting and bringing his family to the Sullivan and Ulster County area. A country boy, he attended high school in Cornwall. Richard was also a gourmet. He operated a successful restaurant in Del Ray, Fla. and assisted the Carpinone family operate Christopher's in Hurleyville. His mailbox was usually half full with food and wine magazines. Richard was the treasurer and communications director for the Brenner for US Senate campaign. Richard is survived by Dr. Richard S. Pergolizzi Jr. and wife Cheryl of Fairfax, Va. and daughter Laura Pergolizzi of New York City and Hollywood, and two grandchildren, Luca (born Juy 16, 2006) and Miah Pergolizzi. He was predeceased by his wife Marie V. Pergolizzi.
