He had siblings James Henry Gartrell, Elizabeth (Gartrell) Donald, John Gartrell, and Francis Gartrell. He married Mary (Donald) Gartrell in 1865, and had children Richard Gartrell, Ellen (Gartrell) Lewis, William John Gartrell, Edwin Gartrell, Annie (Gartrell) Mennell, Alfred Gartrell, and Harry Gartrell. Richard Gartrell died at age 77 years old on September 30, 1918 in Orange, NSW Australia.
