Introduction

From 3rd grade on, I was best friends with Karen Stokke. Her father was Richard 'Dick' Stokke, a well known Seattle area disc jockey, who also performed in a local theater. When I met Karen, her parents were divorced, so I only met 'Mr. Stokke' occasionally as Karen and her brothers (all 4) lived with their mother in the U District in Seattle. Mr. Stokke was a larger than life figure to us-funny, kind, accomplished..and when he was around he would tell us stories about being on stage, about folks he met through radio, and draw cartoons. One year for Halloween Karen and I dressed up as a two-headed monster, and Mr. Stokke did our facial makeup with his theater make-up case. Karen adored her father, and her Norwegian roots.

KJR was the first station in Seattle to play rock 'n roll. He was renowned for his rapier wit and sarcasm. Dick also was an actor in local theater, and was a wonderful artist/cartoonist.

Richard 'Dick' Stokke married Carolyn Edith Webster the 27th of June, 1941 in Seattle, WA. The couple had 5 children (4 sons and one daughter). By 1958 they had divorced. On valentine's day, 1969, Richard remarried to Beverly Bales Mix in Bellevue, WA. He was 52, she was 41 years old.
