  • Introduction

    Richard E. Alberding Port worker, 74Richard "Dick" E. Alberding, 74, of Portland, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 in Portland. Mr. Alberding was born July 21, 1929 in Liberal, Kan., to Ella and Ernest Berg. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1949. He worked at Tongue Point, was a gillnetter and also worked on the construction of the Youngs Bay Bridge and on the Port of Astoria dredge Natoma. On March 30, 1959, he married Donna Mae Antijunti in Astoria. She survives, residing in Portland. In 1965, he began working at the Port of Portland on the dredge Oregon. He retired in 1995. Mr. Alberding was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the American Legion and the Heavy Operator Union No. 701. He owned a cabin at Sunset Beach, where he enjoyed clam digging. His name will be placed on the Fisherman's Memorial. He is survived by a sister, Gene Partch of Kelso, Wash.; two daughters, Kimberly Kiefer of Portland and Kari Alberding of Portland; a son, Richard E. Alberding Jr. of Vancouver, Wash.; a stepson, Gary Antijunti of Vancouver.; and a step-daughter, Coni Franks of Lake Oswego. A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Astoria. Although his OBIT states his father was Ernest Berg, that's not the fact. His real father was Roy Raymond Alberding, Ella Ross's first husband. He was born 1906 in Kansas and they were married and divorced. Mr. Berg was her second husband and raised the children.

The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
