Richard Duffety 1856 - 1911

Richard Duffety was born in 1856 in England United Kingdom to Joseph Duffety and Elizabeth (Beer) Duffety, and had siblings Elizabeth Ann Duffety, Henry Duffety, Hester Ann (Duffety) Spear, Mary Ann Duffety, and Eliza Ann Duffety. He married Mary Ann (Froud) Duffety in 1880 in Bristol, Bristol City County, and had children Frederick William Duffety, Martha Elizabeth (Duffety) Pinnock, Annie Duffety, Richard James Duffety, Samuel Duffety, Thomas Duffety, and Henry Charles Duffety. Richard Duffety died at age 55 years old in 1911 in Bristol.

In 1856, in the year that Richard Duffety was born, on January 26th the Battle of Seattle occurred. Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.

In 1874, Richard was 18 years old when on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.
