    FALL RIVER -- Dr. Rene P. Nasser, 65, of Madison Street, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Marie Therese "Mizette" (Abou-Daoud) Nasser; they were married for 29 years. Born in Tantah, Egypt, the son of Yvonne (Karama) Nasser and the late attorney Philippe A. Nasser, he lived in Fall River for 25 years. A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine-Alexandria University, Egypt, Dr. Nasser received his medical degree in 1960, after which he did an internship at the Alexandria University Hospital. He worked as an anesthesiologist in London where he obtained a diploma of anesthesia from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He then worked as an anesthesiologist at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1965, he immigrated to the United States and completed an internship at New York University Medical School, followed by a residency at New York University and Bellevue Hospitals. From 1968 to 1974, he worked as an attending physician and assistant professor of anesthesia at New York University Medical School. In 1974, he moved to Fall River and worked as an attending physician in the anesthesia department at Union Hospital, Charlton Memorial Hospital and then Saint Anne's Hospital until his retirement in December of 1995. Dr. Nasser was a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiologists and a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, American Medical Association, Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists, Massachusetts Medical Society and Fall River Medical Society. Previously, he was a member of the New York Medical Society and New York Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Nasser was a Melkite Catholic and a communicant of St. Anthony of the Desert Church. Survivors include his widow; his mother; a son, Michael Nasser, a student at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Natalie Nasser, a student at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston; two brothers, Gabriel P. Nasser and Richard P. Nasser, both of New York; a sister, Gisele Nasser of New York; several nieces and nephews including Dr. Bassem Nasser of Fall River; and a cousin, Dr. Andre Nasser of Fall River. His funeral will be at 845 a.m. Wednesday at Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of the Desert Church, 300 N. Eastern Ave. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

In 1944, at the age of only 11 years old, Rene was alive when on June 22nd, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, called the G.I. Bill, was signed into law, pushed through by the veteran's organizations. Benefits provided for veterans to return to school (high school, vocational school, or college), obtain low interest home mortgages and low interest business loans, and (if needed) one year of unemployment insurance. Since most returning vets immediately found work, less than 20% of the unemployment benefits were distributed.
