She was in a relationship with Peter Selander, and had children Anna Erika (Selander), Henry Selander, John Williams Selander, and Clarence F Selander. Rendina Narveson died at age 84 years old in 1968.

  • Introduction

    Rendina (Dina or Dena) Caroline Narveson Married Peter Selander in 1903, had four children, divorced him, and had another child some time after the divorce. Dina sent her four oldest children to an orphanage until she could take care of them and sent her youngest to live with her brother and his wife. Dina got her children back and they stayed with her step father, their step grandfather, while she was working at a restaurant and a boarding house. Dina eventually settled down in International Falls, MN with her youngest son, Clarence Selander. She outlived all of her children except for Clarence when she passed away from old age in 1968.

In 1884, in the year that Rendina Caroline Narveson was born, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
