Ethnicity & Family History
Regina's father emigrated from Italy. Regina's maternal side of her family emigrated from Sweden.
Nationality & Locations
Regina spent most of her youth in Jamestown NY. The local population at that time was about 50 percent of Italian Heritage, and 50 percent of Swedish Heritage. Regina'a father was an immigrant from Tortorici Sicily, Italy, making her first generation Italian. He became a US citizen when Regina was a six year old student of St James Catholic School. Regina's mother was especially proud to be of Swedish Heritage, raised by her Swedish born grandmother, and also to serve as Regina's Sunday School Teacher at St James Catholic School in Jamestown NY. Both of Regina's maternal great grandparents (Augusta Marie Johansen Anderson and Carl J Anderson) emigrated from Sweden and lived in Jamestown NY until their deaths. Augusta Marie Anderson is buried in Frewsburg NY, and Carl J Anderson is buried in Soldiers Circle in Lakeview Cemetery. Regina's paternal grandparents (Joseph and Josephine Mazzurco) emigrated from Sicily to Jamestown NY in 1960. They helped their three sons establish their business in Jamestown NY, Mazzurco Brothers Colombia Markets Fine Fancy Imported Italian Foods, and later, Papa Joe's Laundromat. Her paternal grandparents then traveled back and forth for many years, to spend winters in Italy and summers in Jamestown NY. Regina's paternal grandparents, Joseph and Josephine, are both buried in Sicily.
Religious Beliefs
Regina is a Christian. Regina holds a deep spiritual belief that we can be unified in our diversity.
From a young age in Jamestown NY, her grandfather Joseph Mazzurco and two of her Sicilian Great Aunts, Josephine Mazzurco Canfora and Bessie Mazzurco Guifreda taught her about the power and importance of daily prayer and worship by setting an excellent example for her right in their own homes. Members of Regina's mother's family were Catholic, Methodist and Baptist. Regina attended St James Roman Catholic School in Jamestown NY, from grades K-2.
Over many years, Regina volunteered her skills and talents to serve at multiple churches of multiple denominations. She volunteered to teach both Spanish and Italian at her children's parochial school, Lighthouse Baptist Christian Academy from 2000-2008. She volunteered to teach outbound missionary teams from Lakewood Baptist Church to Cuba around 2013. She created and maintains a Facebook Group page, in support of local culture and heritage, called Italian Festivals of Jamestown NY to encourage people to celebrate together and share their cultures with their local communities. She is a big fan and promoter on her FB page, of the annual St Nicholas Greek Festival in Jamestown NY and of the annual Scandinavian and Swedish Festivals.

Josephine and Joseph Mazzurco kept this picture of their three great grandchildren on their night table in a silver frame, next to their bed in Campo Felice di Rocella Sicily. This picture was likely taken around 1988, since David, the baby in arms was born in Dec, 1987. This was a reminder that even though Joseph and Josephine moved back to Italy as snowbirds, back and forth across the Atlantic ocean, they never forgot their grand daughter Gina, and their three grandkids, Daniel Alejandro Gonzalez, far left, Nicholas Joseph Gonzalez, who is the "figliozzo" in the middle, and David Neil Gonzalez, baby in arms. The adults in this back of this picture are from left, father of these three children, Gregorio Alejandro Gonzalez Monroy, and mother of these three children, Regina Marie Mazzurco Gonzalez. This picture was taken by a traveling salesman over at Woodlawn Motel in Jamestown NY, back when it really was a motel. It was turned into a huge 16 by 20 portrait, but that may have gotten lost in the several moves since then. It is nice that some Sicilian cousins shared this via social media back with the mother pictured here some thirty five years later. This is a reminder, that despite time and distance, the love of grandparents endures.
Anders August Anderson (Uncle Andy) is in the picture from circa 1976-1979 surrounded by his four sisters in Frewsburg, NY at his sister Violet's apt behind the bowling alley in Frewsburg NY. Violet is doing the dishes, with her back toward all her siblings, who are behind her in this picture. From left to right, Anne, Andy, Linnea, (standing in a light green sleeveless shirt) Violet in white shirt, and Lillian in a dark shirt, crouched down on the floor. It was a rare occasion since Anne (sitting at the table in this pic) lived in California most of the time. Aunt Violet can be seen on the far right with her hands in her sink, doing the dishes. As I reflect more and more on this picture and the fact I had my very own copy of it growing up, I suspect I (Gina) may be the one who took this picture of my grandmother Linnea (in the sleeveless shirt) and all her siblings sometime around 1975-1979. I was in camera club at school, at Frewsburg Central Schools between my seventh and eighth grade years, (about forty six years ago now). This photo was taken on C 110 Kodak Film. I kept a copy of this photo on the cover of my personal green photo album for many years along with a color photo printed from identical film, rounded edges color print, of our friend Lucille Hedberg Coombs. I had two cameras during those years, (one with built in flash, and the other with a disposable flash bulb you had to put on top of it, that only had four flashes before it had to be replaced) and both of my cameras took C 110 Kodak Film. I think I may have given the negatives of this photo to Gramma Donoghue so she could print more copies of this photo and share them with her siblings. (Either that, or Aunt Anne's son Steve Blazyak of California took this picture in Aunt Vi's apartment. He is the person who scanned it and uploaded it on our Facebook family page. But I think it is cropped since I remember being able to see Aunt Lillian's knees in my print copy of this photo.) I recognize this setting very well, since my mother stopped by for "coffee" with Violet frequently at that table, and I was frequently looking out from that exact same position looking out at the kitchen, from the living room in Violet's straight shot linear laid apt, with my 2 DC comic books and a four pack of sticky red licorice. My mother Linda gave me a few quarters to buy these around the corner, from the Frewsburg Newsroom, every time we visited Aunt Violet. Comic books were only 25 cents each. I bought and collected DC comic books from 1973-1979, eventually accumulating over 300 of them, all purchased one or two at a time, while my mother was visiting Aunt Violet for "coffee". That is a lot of coffee and a lot of comic books.
When my licorice was all gone, and I had finished reading my comic books, but my Mom and Aunt Violet were not yet done with their "coffee" I would sit and watch Aunt Violet's little black and white television in the living room, favoring shows that came in Color, even on a Black and White TV, like "THAT GIRL".
Grandma Linnea Donoghue standing in the center with a sleeveless shirt, surrounded by all her siblings. Uncle Andy is to her right, and Aunt Violet is to her left. Her twin sister Lillian is crouched down in front of her. Her sister Anne is wearing glasses, and sitting at the table.
Anne Anderson is pictured on the far left side of this photo with all of her siblings. She is sitting right next to Andy Anderson her brother, followed by Linnea Anderson Donoghue her sister, who is standing up next to Andy, followed by her sister Violet Anderson Carlson , on the far right, and her sister Lilian Anderson Wynn Rogers, who is sitting or kneeling down on the floor.
