Pitchess escapee recaptured
CASTAIC - An inmate was recaptured within hours of his escape from the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho when sheriff's deputies spotted him hiding behind an abandoned business. Raymond Edward Sermak, 28, of San Diego, escaped from the minimum security Ranch facility sometime after the 10 p.m. inmate count Monday, said Deputy Patrick Hauser of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Sermake was recaptured at about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday behind the defunct Fisherman's Wharf store on Lake Hughes Road.
Sermak was arrested September 21 on suspicion of burglary and was scheduled to be released November 9 after entering a plea to charges in the case, Hauser said. "He had less than 30 days to go and now he faces escape charges and the possibility of two more years in prison, " Hauser said.
Sermak told deputies from the Santa Clarity Valley Sheriff's Station who recaptured him that he jumped over the north fence of the jail following the 10 p.m. inmate count because he feared being attacked by other inmates. Sermak was arrested without incident.
