Ray was American and served under General George Patton in his anti-tank division. Following his service in the United States Army, Ray would follow his brother-in-law to La Junta, Colorado. There Ray would relieve his brother-in-law of his responsibilities a home for boys known as the Colorado Boys Ranch. While acting as the Administrator for the ranch, Ray would take responsibility for over a few hundred children who were at risk for various forms of abuse, mental disabilities, or maybe the child had no home to call his own. Ray was troop master for troop 235, Rocky Mountain Council. In any event, Ray was a large man and could be intimidating, although this was not his lot when it came to the boys who would come to know him as a father figure with a heart larger than the shadow that he cast. Ray left La Junta after his marriage ended in divorce. He relocated and took employment at Leavenworth, Kansas where he served as a penal officer. Ray died in Leavenworth and was buried there. He remains a figure of a father to those who came to his side and who found the man they needed.
