Ralph Swope's History: 1892 - 1966

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

I was young when I knew Grandpa Swope. I was not quite 10 when he died in 1966. I am not sure if he was born in Davenport, IA, and then went later with his parents, or if his parents went to Redfield, SD and was born there. He had a brother Ora and a sister Ethel. The family farm was west of Redfield. I think he knew Grandma Swope when he was young because her family's farm was north of his family's. I think he was in WW 1 in Europe. They had like two families, my Aunt Thelma, my Dad Armond, and later Virgil and last Aileen. When I can remember, Grandma and Grandpa were living in town. Grandpa was a quiet man. He would put a bowl on my sister and my heads and give us haircuts. He had a workshop in his basement in town. One time he had a heart-attack at home, and they had to put a needle in his chest. His ancestry was Scots, Scots-Irish.
