Did you know?
In 1844, in the year that Ralph John Matthews was born, in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.
Did you know?
In 1851, at the age of only 7 years old, Ralph was alive when on May 15th, the first of many Australian gold rushes was publicized. Because the California Gold Rush had caused many Australians to emigrate to California, Australia decided that the gold found in Australia should be publicized, rather than suppressing the news as earlier finds had been.
