Rachel Glance of Australia was born in 1871 to Israel Glance and Rebecca Abecassis Glance. She had siblings Jacob Glance, Lily Glance, Rosa Glance, Leah Glance, Sarah Glance, Ruth Glance, Albert Glance, Ruth Glance, Levi Glance, Solomon Glance, Henry Glance, and Woolf Glance. Rachel Glance died at age 6 years old in 1877.

In 1871, in the year that Rachel Glance was born, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.

In 1877, in the year of Rachel Glance's passing, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
