Rachel Annie (Rowan) Lister was born in 1878 to John Rowan and Mary Ann (Libbis) Rowan, and had siblings Lily (Rowan) Lister, Daniel Rowan, John Edward Rowan, and Florence (Rowan) Murphy. She married John Henry Lister, and had children John Francis Lister, Herbert Henry Lister, and Ernest Lister. Rachel Lister died at age 70 years old on January 18, 1949 at Prince Henry's Hospital in South Melbourne, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Fawkner, City of Moreland County.

In 1886, by the time she was only 8 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
