In 1821, in the year that Philadelphia (Shadwell) Munn was born, on July 10th, the United States took possession of the recently acquired territory of Florida from Spain. Spain could no longer afford to support the area so, through a treaty, the US received East and West Florida. Future President Andrew Jackson briefly served as governor of the territory.

In 1830, Philadelphia was merely 9 years old when on August 31st, Edwin Beard Budding was granted a patent for the invention of the lawn mower. Budding invented the lawn mower to cut the grass on sports grounds and extensive gardens - it was intended to be a superior alternative to the scythe. His mower was 19 inches wide with a frame made of wrought iron and looked much like a modern push mower.
