Percy Hawea Harbutt was born in 1877 in Auckland, Auckland New Zealand to Thomas Jefcoate Harbutt and Annabelle (Jennings) Harbutt, and had siblings Helier Harbutt, Sydney Jefcoate Harbutt, Wilfred Harbutt, Ella (Harbutt) Allen, Vida Sims, Ethelwyn Winstone, Bruce Harbutt, and Grace Annabelle (Harbutt) Winstone. He married Eunice Ann Bentham (Barlow) Harbutt, and had a child Lucy Barlow (Harbutt) Primrose. Percy Harbutt died at age 81 years old on November 29, 1959.

In 1877, in the year that Percy Hawea Harbutt was born, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
