Peleg Sherman was born in April 1780 at Portsmouth, Newport, RI to Joseph Sherman and Sarah Sherman, and had siblings Elizabeth Sherman, Mary Sherman, Joseph Sherman, Isaac Sherman, Oliver Sherman, Samuel Sherman, Ruth Sherman, Job Sherman, and James Sherman. He married Hannah Willett, and had children Ruth Sherman, Samuel Sherman, Harriet Sherman, Eliza Sherman, Ann M Sherman, and Robert J Sherman. Peleg Sherman died at age 89 years old on July 25, 1869 in Wirt, Allegany County, New York United States.

In 1809, when he was 29 years old, on December 30th, Boston Massachusetts banned the wearing of masks at balls. Boston was following many other places - including England - by banning masked balls, which were considered to contribute to loose morals. After all, with masks, you couldn't tell the class of the person or even their gender! The law was extended in 1849 and repealed in 1963.

In 1829, Peleg was 49 years old when on May 6th, the patent for an instrument called an "accordion" was applied for by German citizen Cyrill Demian. The patent described the accordion this way: "Its appearance essentially consists of a little box with feathers of metal plates and bellows fixed to it, in such a way that it can easily be carried, and therefore traveling visitors to the country will appreciate the instrument."
