    Pearle Wallace Concord - The funeral will be Sunday for Pearle Rodgers Floyd Wallace, 96, 430 Brookwood Ave. N.E., who died Thursday (September 11, 1997), at Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born August 20, 1901, in Wilkesboro, N.C. Mrs. Wallace, a daughter of the late Lottie Burrage Rodgers and the Rev. Jessie Pinkney Rodgers, she was a charter member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Salisbury, N.C. Her 1st husband, Charles Otis Floyd, died in 1954, her 2nd husband John Aaron Wallace, died February 15, 1972. Survivors include son Dr. Charles Frederick Floyd, Athens, G.A. Services: Graveside, 2 P.M. Sunday, City Memorial Park, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Michael Kurtz, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Salisbury. Visitation: The family will receive friends at the service. Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

In 1901, in the year that Pearle (Rodgers) Floyd Wallace was born, shortly after beginning his second term, President McKinley was assassinated by the self proclaimed anarchist Leon Czolgosz. The last President to have served in the Civil War - he began as a private and ended the war as a brevet major - McKinley was a Republican. First elected in 1896, he was re-elected in 1900. Six months after the swearing in, McKinley was shot - and died of the gangrene that set in as a result.

In 1916, by the time she was only 15 years old, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
