    Ozzie Chattman, 70, of Bayport, died at Brookhaven™ Memorial Hospital, Pat- chogue, after a long illness. Born in Florida, Mr. Chattman had lived in Bayport since 1950. He was a great® hunting and fishing enthusiast. Mr. Chattman is survived by his wife, Nellie; his sister, Margie Santulli of Howard Beach; -his brother, Joseph of Huntington; two nephews and one niece. -Relative and triends visited Sunday at the Bayport Funeral Home, Inc., 870 Montauk Highway, Bayport. A religious service was held Sunday evening, at the funeral chapel, with Dr. Frederick G.. Mech, Pastor of the Bayport United ' Methodist Church officiating. A private cremation was held Monday morning.

In 1914, in the year that Ozzie Chattman was born, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1925, Ozzie was only 11 years old when in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
