Oscar Earl Gryder, 70, of 501 Jackson Heights was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace George Smith after the 1972 Ford Pinto Station Wagon he was driving left the roadway and struck a large oak tree. Mr. Gryder was convicted in June of murdering his bed-ridden wife in what was called a "mercy killing.'' Mr. Gryder was given a 10-year probated sentence after shooting to death his wife who was deteriorating after suffering a stroke 10 years earlier. Witnesses to the crash said they observed Mr. Gryder apparently asleep at the wheel as the vehicle veered off the highway, said Smith. The west-bound car, which was considered a total loss, left the road on the south side and travelled some 200 feet before crashing into the tree, investigating highway troopers reported. Smith said the man suffered severe head injuries. The accident happened near County Road 203 about 10:15 a.m. Funeral services for Mr. Gryder were held Tuesday afternoon in Harrell Memorial Chapel in Dublin. Mr. Gryder was born Sept. 28, 1912 in Lingleville and had lived in Dublin. He resided in Granbury for 11 years. Mr. Gryder was employed for 13 years at General Dynamics in Fort Worth. He was a Mason and member of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gene Baldree and Mrs. Bobbie Glenn, both of Granbury; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren
