    Orpha Eliza was the daughter of Nancy Clementine Mason (1776 - 1856) and Moses J. Box (1776 - 1856), who was a Saponi / Cheraw / Catawba (Eastern Sioux) descendant. The family was likely part of the group of southeastern Native Americans of the Carolinas who had been adopted by the Cayuga Nation (Gayogoho:no) of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in 1753 who migrated to now Ohio, some of whom later migrated southwards to now Middle Tennessee Cherokee / Chickasaw territory before the removal 1838-39. Orpha Eliza Box was married NC now TN ca 1821 to Goen Childress (1798 - 1870).

In 1807, this person was merely 8 years old when on March 2nd, the U.S. Congress passed an act to "prohibit the importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States . . . from any foreign kingdom, place, or country" This Federal law, proposed by Thomas Jefferson in 1806, took effect on January 1,1808. However, historians estimate that over 50,000 slaves were brought to the U.S. after the Act since the U.S. did not include Spanish Florida and Texas - and therefore places where slaves could be brought in.
