    Olive M. Widger, 84 WINDHAM- Olive M. Widger, 84, died peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Jan. 29, 2010, with family at her side. She was born in York Village on Nov. 11, 1925, the daughter of John and Marion (Hawkes) Irish. Olive graduated from Windham High School, Class of 1944, where she was on the basketball team. After high school she attended beautician school and then opened her own Beauty Shop in Portland, and later worked at S. D. Warren for a number of years. On June 23, 1962, she married her childhood sweet heart Ralph H. Widger and they spent 46 wonderful years together until his death on October 23, 2008. During her early years, Olive enjoyed to traveling until the time that they purchased their house on Sebago Lake, where she loved the outdoors and going out in the boat. She also enjoyed gardening, talking and telling her stories. Most of all she enjoyed the time spent with her family. Olive is survived by her daughter, Donna Grass; her husband, Lloyd of Windham; two step-sons, Steve and his wife Gail of Standish, Rick and his wife, Angie of Windham; two sisters, Janet Lawrence of Bangor and Thelma Sirois of Windham; grandchildren, Kyle and Danny Grass, Jason, Steve, Stacey and Danielle Widger; many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, with Rev. Phil Shearman officiating.

In 1925, in the year that Olive M Widger was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
