  • Introduction

Her full name was Olive Alberta Wells Landes, married to my grandfather, Guy F. Landes. My grandmother was born to Martha Cynthia (Mattie) Rivers (Wells) and Cicero Daniel Wells. Her father died when she was young and her family struggled after that. Her mother remained strong, and ran boarding houses to support the family. We called Olive Mamaw. Mamaw lived through the poverty of growing up and the depression, and was thrifty and frugal til the end. She moved in with my husband, our oldest daughter, young then, and me in 1984 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born in Arkansas, and lived there until she moved to NE. Mamaw was a kind woman who loved children and had compassion for all.

After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
