    Norman Edward Palmer was born to Elmer Palmer (1884 - 1919) and Anna Josephine Zoller (1890 - 1969). His father was an embalmer and his mother did "housework." He had brothers Robert B., and Elmer J. Palmer. Norman married Isabel A. Palmer and they had three daughters. All survived him. See Norman Palmer: Obituary

    The following obituary appeared in The Indianapolis News on September 3, 1979, on page 13: Norman E. Palmer, 67, formerly of Indianapolis, a retired executive, died Saturday at his home in Birmingham., Ala. Palmer, who was reared in Indianapolis, received a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He was retired vice president in charge of sales with Yale Trucks Inc., Birmingham. Services will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Birmingham. Surviviors - wife, Isobel, daughters Mrs. Lloyd Johnson, Mrs. Arthur Little, Mrs. Dan Zedrow.

In 1911, in the year that Norman Palmer was born, the first Indianapolis 500 was run in May. Ray Harroun was the winner - he was an engineer and had retired from racing but he came back for this race. After the race, he retired for good. The purse was $27,550 - the largest offered up to that time - and Harroun received $10,000 for first place. His average time was 74.602 mph.

In 1924, he was merely 13 years old when in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.
