In 1806, in the year that Nicholas Sierralta was born, Noah Webster published his first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. It was the first truly American dictionary, incorporating the idioms and language of the day. Thus began his effort to standardize the American language, which was regionally different. It took him 26 years to complete the entire project.

In 1810, at the age of only 4 years old, Nicholas was alive when on September 23rd, the Republic of West Florida - now the eastern part of Louisiana - declared independence from Spain. The Republic lasted only a few months - until the United States annexed it later in the same year.
