4 Memories, Stories & Photos about Nicholas

The Mickey Gallagher Foundation
Mickey Gallagher was an extraordinary human being. He loved life with a passion few could ever match. Mickey was born with a rare heart condition. It was discovered at a very early age. His parents were told he would not survive past childhood.

Through the wonders of medicine, he defied the odds for many years. Mickey finally needed and received a heart transplant in 1998. For the next three and a half years, he struggled with his new heart. In March of 2002, it was decided that valve replacements would be the cure. After two surgeries, an infection developed that could not be cured. Mickey died May 11th, 2002. Mickey had many loves in his life. His family, friends, sports, theater and fiance just to name a few. He was devoted to all of these things as well as Northeast Catholic High School. He always spoke highly of his times at North. So highly, that he entertained thoughts of becoming an Oblate of St. Francis De Sales.

Mickey also wanted to start an organ donor awareness event called "Keep The Beat". It was to be a big fun party with live music and dancing with plenty of friends. Do to his untimely passing he was never able to see it become a reality. So in 2002 The Gallagher Family and friends started "Keep The Beat". It became an organ donor awareness event but also a scholarship fund established at North Catholic in Mickey's name. Keep The Beat is held every October at Finnigan's Wake. We also hold a Golf outing in May at Juniata Golf Course in the old neighborhood.

With the sad closing of North Catholic our organization has shifted focus. We will no longer be a scholarship. We are and always will be and organ donor awareness event but now we are also going to be trying to help other families who are waiting for transplants. The Mickey Gallagher Foundation has made a five year commitment to the University of Pennsylvania Transplant House to fund construction of a patient room that will bear Mickey's name. This designation strikes a chord with the Gallagher family, for months they spent everyday waiting in the hospital, sometimes sleeping in the waiting room. The Transplant House will provide families support and comfort while waiting for a life changing event. This commitment will forever let people know that Mickey is still here, lending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Despite his illness, Mickey "never had a bad day". He never complained or asked why me. He wore this illness as a badge of honor. He was thankful for it because it made him who he was. He said he would not have been the same person without it. He inspired people to accentuate the positives in life and not dwell on the negatives. He was loved by many in so many ways. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend and most of all a great human being. When you were in his company, he made you feel like the most important person on earth.

Philadelphia Parking Authority employee run over
. . . killed by tow truck By Chad Pradelli on Wednesday, April 22, 2015

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia Parking Authority employee has died after being run over by a tow truck at a PPA lot in South Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Philadelphia Parking Authority and the victim's family are devastated by the tragic accident. Vince Fenerty, Executive Director of the PPA, tells Action News that Bayers is the first employee to be killed on the job in his 32 years at the authority.

"It's just is a devastating effect on this agency." It happened around 6:50 a.m. at a lot located at 2501 Weccacoe Avenue. Police and the Philadelphia Parking Authority say the tow truck driver was backing up when it hit and pinned 60-year-old Jeff Bayers. The two were just wrapping up the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. The tow driver had just dropped off a vehicle at Lot 1 of the Parking Authority in South Philadelphia. Bayers was lot officer who checked in vehicles.

Fenerty tells us, "He was a stellar employee here. Didn't miss time from work, was a wonderful man. I would love to have a hundred Jeffs." Fenerty calls the incident a tragic accident. He says the tow truck driver had only been on the job a year, but was a stellar employee.

"He is devastated. I couldn't begin to guess how someone would feel who accidentally killed a coworker," Fenerty said. Bayers had worked at the Parking Authority for 13 years. He leaves behind a wife and three children...two adult sons and a teenage daughter.

"He was a great guy. He was a great husband, he was married for 32 years, raised his children, was a hardworking man," Fennerty said. Philadelphia Police are investigating and there've been no charges. The Occupation Safety and Health Administration is looking into the matter.

Another "Parking Wars" death
Martin Anderson, a member of the towing squad with the PPA who had been featured on Parking Wars, passed away previously - circa 2007. "From Here's What A&E Didn’t Tell Us About Parking Wars" by NATASHA_B updated MAR 26, 2021

One of the most popular figures in the first proper season of Parking Wars was Philadelphia Parking Authority employee, Martin Anderson. Anderson was the happy-go-lucky driver of one of the PPA’s many tow trucks, and he appeared in the first and fifth episodes of season one.

However, many fans didn’t know that Martin had actually passed away suddenly, before he even saw any of his episodes broadcast on TV. Although there was no mention of his tragic passing in the credits of the Parking Wars episodes in which he appeared, A&E did post a tribute to their reality star on their website.
