Nellie (Marshall) Burns of Kybram Australia was born in 1901 in Kybram to Helen May (Horsburgh) Marshall and David Marshall. She had siblings James David Marshall, Mary May Marshall, George John Marshall, Archibald Marshall, William Charles Marshall, and Alexander Horsburgh Marshall. She married Robert Burns in 1922, and had children St Kevin Burns, Albert Charles Nelson Burns, Shirley Mabel Burns, and Allen Vinct Burns. Nellie Burns died at age 66 years old in 1967 in Heidelberg, City of Banyule County, VIC.

The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
