    Nathan Bade was born near Odessa, Ukraine, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. He emigrated to the United States when he was 13. He married Celia Amster Bader who was the daughter of recent Polish immigrants. Together they had Supreme Court Justice Ruther Bader Ginsburg, who, was originally named Joan, but because there were so many children in her class with the name Joan, suggested she go by her middle name.
