In 1818, in the year that Nancy (Nichols) Stinson was born, on October 20th, the Treaty of 1818 - between the U.S. and the United Kingdom - established the boundary between the U.S. and British North America as the 49th parallel north. The treaty also allowed for joint occupation and settlement of the "Oregon Country" - known currently as the Pacific Northwest of the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

In 1822, when she was only 4 years old, on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.
