2nd Great Grandmother. She came from Washington County, Arkansas, via a ox driven wagon train, with her husband Thomas Jefferson Pope, her daughter Ann Eliza Pope, her father in law John Henry Pope, his wife Jane Shumate Pope and several other Pope family members. They arrived in San Joaquin County, CA in 1861. The newspaper article had her as Thomas Jefferson Pope’s Indian wife Mourning, his first wife. They called Native American people Indians, in those days. She was a mother to 17 children, 13 of them lived, in California, United States. She was a member of The Native Daughters of the Golden West. Her ancestors can’t be found and were probably from North Carolina. She is white on the United States Census records, but the family knows different.
