Introduction

Some confusion exists regarding Montgomery's birth date. It should be noted that Montgomery's obituary states that he was born Dec 18, 1824, however the tombstone in Mountain Home Cemetery reads 1822. His sister, Penelope J Long was born Sept 4, 1822 (according to her tombstone). If the 1822 date is correct, he would have had to have been born no later than early January 1822. Just a bit less than 9 months difference. His brother, Griffith Carr Long was born Mar 26, 1824 (according to his records). If this date is correct and Montgomery's birth date is 18 Dec 1824, that is also just less than 9 months between their age. Reviewing the census records of Allegan County, Michigan for the years 1860, 1870 and 1880 Montgomery gives his birth year as "about" 1824. In the 1900 census record, he gives his birth year as 1823. Go figure!!
