  • Introduction

    My Nana was born in Wolfeboro, NH to Edwin Lewis Furber and Annie Swan Jerome Furber. The house where she was born was a farm that is now a timeshare facility known as the Windrifter. She was born Miriam Louise Furber & married Robert Jasper Irish. They had four children, Louise, Edwin, Catherine, & Janet. They divorced around WWII. He remarried Evelyn Drager and lived in Arlington, VA after the war until his death of a heart attack on xmas day 1970. My Nana stayed in Wolfeboro and lived in a big white house on Main Street until it burned down when I was a child. She married Harold Pendergast several years before she died. She passed away from an an aortic aneurysm. Harold went into assisted living within a few years. Harold was a U.S. veteran.

In 1896, in the year that Miriam Pendergast was born, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.

In 1910, at the age of only 14 years old, Miriam was alive when the Mann Act, also called the White-Slave Traffic Act, was signed into law. Its purpose was to make it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose". But the language was so broad that it was also applied to consensual sex between adults when wished.
