Minnie Sawyer ( Tomlinson 1881 - 1919

Minnie (Tomlinson) Sawyer was born in 1881 to Selina Ann Tomlinson and George Thomas Tomlinson, and had siblings Lily Osler, Emily Peter, Albert George Tomlinson, Elsie Mildred Little ( Tomlinson, and Ada Tomlinson. She married James Sawyer, and had children Harold Wrenford Sawyer and Mildred Amy McFarlane ( Sawyer. Minnie Sawyer died at age 37 years old on May 27, 1919, and was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery Brodribb Road, in Hazelwood, Latrobe City County, VIC Australia.

In 1881, in the year that Minnie Sawyer ( Tomlinson was born, on November 19th, a meteorite landed a few miles southwest of Odessa, Ukraine. According to one report: "About 7 o'clock one morning a bright and serpentine tail of fire was seen passing over the town by the inhabitants of Odessa, and M. Prendel, editor of one of the Odessa papers, surmising that the phenomenon betokened a fall of meteorites, offered a reward to any person who would bring him one. Three days afterward a gentleman of Grossliebental brought him one which had been found by a peasant who was nearly frightened out of his senses at its fall. It fell beside him while at work in his field and buried itself .55 meters (almost 2 ft) into the ground." The recovered piece was about 17.5 lbs.

In 1891, at the age of only 10 years old, Minnie was alive when James Naismith, at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA, invented the game of basketball. Originally using two peach baskets and a soccer ball, he created the game to keep his students active during the long, harsh New England winters.
