Michael Thomas Kelly was born in 1876 to Daniel Kelly and Alice (O'Meara) Kelly, and had siblings Patrick John Kelly, Catherine Kelly, Daniel Kelly, Christopher David Kelly, and William Andrew Kelly. He married Mary Theresa Kelly, and had a child Francis Gerard Kelly. Michael Kelly died at age 68 years old on February 22, 1945 in Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Hadfield, City of Moreland County.

Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
