Metta Jane (Heitmann) O'Connor 1909 - 2007

Metta Jane (Heitmann) O'connor was born in 1909 to John Herman Heitmann and Emily Jane (Grey) Heitmann, and had siblings Olive Grace (Heitmann) John, Dagmar Vida (Heitmann) O'Dea, Melva Catherine (Heitmann) Dixon, Glenice (Heitmann) Jones, and Eileen Catharine Heitmann. She married William Wells O'Connor, and had children Beverly Mary (O'Connor) Puls and Delys O'Connor. Metta O'connor died at age 97 years old on March 2, 2007, and was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery Railway Rd, in Karrakatta, City of Nedlands County Australia.

In 1909, in the year that Metta Jane (Heitmann) O'Connor was born, the New York Times published the first movie review. It was a report on D.W. Griffith's movie "Pippa Passes" also called "The Song of Conscience", a silent film. The review said that this work was moving away from "lurid material that attracted the wrath of censors and concerned citizens and toward more respectable ends. The movie was the story of a young female factory worker, on her day off, wandering and singing - thus changing the hearts of those around her towards good.

In 1928, she was 19 years old when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
