Mervan John Owen of Hamp Australia was born in 1924 to Laura Florence Lucas Hodgson and Horace Owen. They had siblings Thelma Lorrie Owen, Lindsay Horace Owen, Colin Charles Owen, Ernt Richard Owen, Ernt Richard Owen, Ross Humphrey Owen, and Laura May Hodgson. Mervan Owen died at age 45 years old in 1969 in Hamp.

In 1924, in the year that Mervan John Owen was born, Macy's department store in New York held its first "Thanksgiving parade" on November 27th at 9a - during church services but leaving plenty of time to attend the big football game between Syracuse and Columbia universities. The parade was held as a way to promote the opening of the “World’s Largest Store” and its 1 million square feet of retail space in Manhattan’s Herald Square. The parade was 6 miles long and included floats, Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and sword-wielding knights, and animals from Central Park Zoo. Santa Claus, of course, brought up the rear - opening the Christmas shopping season for Macy's.

In 1931, when this person was only 7 years old, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
