He had been previously married to Violet Washburn (1928 - 1975) in 1943. They also had one child. Merton Bowring died on May 23rd, 2010 in Skowhegan, Somerset County, Maine at the age of 87. He is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, Somerset County, Maine.

    ANSON - Merton "Merty" C. Bowring Sr., 87, died May 23, 2010, at the Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan with his family by his side. He was born in Madison Aug. 4, 1922, the son of Henry A. Jr. and Alice Maude (Meservie) Bowring Sr. Merton was educated in the schools of Madison. He married Ellen Stevenson Sept. 7, 1974, in New Vineyard. Merton worked for the town of Madison on the road crew for more than 26 years, retiring in 1979 due to ill health. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Bowring of Anson; a sister, Geraldine Damren; brother-in-law, William Stevenson; two sisters-in-law, Althea Bowring and Isabelle Foster and her husband, Jack; 17 grandchildren, Juanita Shaw and her husband, Les, Carla Davis and her husband, Ed, Lesley Huey and her husband, Mark, Vicky Irish, Tina Shaw and her friend, Eric Rulard, Monica Shaw, Merton Bowring Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, Merton Harvey Bowring, Michael Bowring, Marylee Clukey, Jo Anna Clukey and her companion, Tiny, Brandy Doyle and her husband, Dave, Shane Doyle and his wife, Molly, Ronald C. Brann Jr. and his wife, Debbie, Oscar S. Brann and his wife, Jessica, Cassidy O. Brann and her husband, John, and Charles Brann and his wife, Barbara; five great-grandchildren, Michael Shaw, Joshua Bowring, Ashlin Bowring, Leeanne Huey and Adam Huey, Andrea Loren Rulard; two great-great-grandchildren, Jenna Flag and Journey Doyle; many nieces, nephews and cousins; devoted friends, Ann Thornton, Deborah and Frazier Moody, Linda Jean Cates. He was predeceased by his parents; and four brothers, Pearly, Morris, Milo, and Henry Bowring. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison. - Morning Sentinel on May 26th, 2018.

In 1922, in the year that Merton C Bowring was born, on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.

In 1933, when he was merely 11 years old, on December 5th, the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. The 21st Amendment said "The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed." Alcohol was legal again! It was the only amendment to the Constitution approved for the explicit purpose of repealing a previously existing amendment. South Carolina was the only state to reject the Amendment.
